As we prepare this day to feast and to give thanks, the Jolly Good Fellows give you 10 things to be thankful for regarding Georgia Tech football in the year 2009. What are you thankful for?

10. Thankful that we are not part of Dawg Nation regardless of outcome this Saturday. What’s the Good Word?
9. Thankful for Josh Nesbitt, the most undervalued QB in college football.
8. Thankful for Jonathan Dwyer, a true star who doesn’t complain about getting hit and tackled every play whether he has the ball or not.
7. Thankful for A-backs, the most unselfish group of athletes who put team before “me.”
6. Thankful for an offensive line that has learned to play with a chip on its shoulder.
5. Thankful for Derrick Morgan who cannot be blocked by one, two, and sometimes not even three players.
4. Thankful that a new attitude is springing up regarding Tech football that isn’t about 5 star recruiting classes, but more about hard work, determination, and execution toward perfection.
3. Thankful for Tech A.D, D-Rad, he gets Tech; its tradition and its future.
2. Thankful for being the ACC Coastal Division Champions and playing for a shot at first BCS bowl.
1. Thankful for Coach Paul Johnson, the greatest thing to happen to Georgia Tech football in many of our lifetimes.

Let us feast and THWG!

After watching the game again here is my postgame review:

The Good:
#1: Tech Won, 30-27!
#2: D-Line is NOT as bad I first thought, Jason Peters and Ben Anderson will be fine, both are extremely explosive and bounced a lot of plays outside.
#3: Derrick Morgan cannot be blocked by one man
#4: The offensive plays during the drought were not that bad, there were a lot of 3 yard runs that could and should of been 30+ yard runs. Easily corrected.
#5: Anthony Allen is a man, he’s the real deal. Should of kept feeding him on toss sweeps.

The Bad:
#1: D-backs took off 5 plays and Klimpson made it hurt. Played a little timid from my perspective. More flying around, less thinking.
#2: Nesbitt has to be a better passer and check down or take off running. We forget he was recruited to play in the pro set, yet he doesn’t look comfortable throwing it. His last throw of the game was great, set his feet and threw off his front foot, great pass and great catch. He can do it.
#3: Offense has to finish drives with TD’s. We had no long drives that resulted in TD’s.
#4: Defense has to catch the INT’s when the ball is in their hands. No excuses!

The Ugly:
#1: I hate to say it but Tech O-line has to play more consistent. At times they were executing perfectly, then during the drought they were just getting blown off the ball and couldn’t get to their assignments. I don’t like to call out names but the backup center is just not good. Lazy off the ball and flops way too much. The O-line is still a work in progress, it’s actually scary to think how much better the offense will be once the O-line play is more consistent. It’s coming, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Q: You’re a BCS coach. What’s one team you don’t want to face this fall (not including defending national champion Florida)?

Hayes: Georgia Tech. Good luck to any defense/defensive coordinator that hasn’t had either a full offseason or a full month before a bowl to prepare for the triple option-based offense.

Tech embarrassed numerous teams last fall when the entire personnel on offense—from the line, to the quarterback, to the running backs—didn’t really get the intricacies and nuances of the scheme. As good as fullback Jonathan Dwyer was last season, wait and see how many more big runs he breaks this fall.

Why, you ask? Because quarterback Josh Nesbitt has a better understanding of the offense, and because at 6-1, 220 pounds, he’s like a tailback running the offense. Then there are wingbacks Roddy Jones and Louisville transfer Anthony Allen, two more legitimate threats in the backfield to force defenders to choose between four dangerous options.

No wonder coaching legend Barry Switzer still claims that the wishbone, when run properly and with the right personnel, can dominate the college game. The reality is, the spread-option offenses of this era are, for the most part, triple option schemes based in the shotgun.
