“The Exoricst” has one last demon to exorcise: Charlottesville

In 1990, Georgia Tech defeated an undefeated #1 Virginia team in Charlottesville.  Almost 20 years later, the Jackets have yet to do it again.

Yellow Jackets head coach Paul Johnson has exorcised some old Tech demons in his time, but he has yet to face the Cavaliers in Charlottesville. Since Bobby Ross’ National Championship run in ’90, no Tech coach has been successful. If that’s the barometer, then Johnson’s 2009 Jackets may be the best Tech team since then.

“Georgia Tech hasn’t won up there since Methuselah was a boy,” said Paul Johnson.

This is a game that brought up several alarms before the season. To make matters worse, the Jackets are coming off the highest of highs after beating Virginia Tech, and now head on the road to face a lesser opponent. In past years, the Jackets fell on their face after a big win. Even Johnson’s Tech team faltered last year at North Carolina after a big program win over Florida State.

Are these Jackets any different?

A loss at Virginia means Tech’s big win over Virginia Tech means nothing. Tech would be eliminated from ACC contention. A loss also means Virginia will continue their elusive hold on Tech, and a 2-0 record against Johnson after last seasons win in Atlanta.

Virginia has also won three straight after starting the season 0-3. Including a 2-0 record in the ACC, placing them atop the Coastal Division.

In some ways, this game is bigger than Virginia Tech, Florida State, UNC, Clemson and even Miami. Mainly because this game is next, and has yet to be played.

The Jackets have come a long way. A set back up north means a taste of the last 20 years.

“Anything we can use to motivate the players,” Johnson said. “You throw enough against the wall to see what sticks. It may work for some guys.”

This one is on Paul.

It’s long overdue to exorcise this demon. Tech can’t slip now. Here’s some inspiration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nlhMxx-vfQ

The past means nothing. The last twenty years won’t play one factor in this game except for us to talk about it. When it’s time to buckle the chin strap the talk is done and all that matters is executing your assignment. Something I believe this Tech team is learning under P.J. They are beginning to understand that hype and rankings don’t mean squat when it comes to playing the game. It’s about personal responsibility. Now go out and get the job done, leave the hype for others. I feel a blog post coming!
